HERRIES LAKELAND: The world of Hugh Walpole and The Herries Chronicle (DVD)
When Rogue Herries, the first volume of Hugh Walpole's saga of Lakeland life, was first published in 1930 John Buchan said it was "the best novel in English since Jude the Obscure".
In this visually stunning programme Eric Robson, acclaimed presenter and documentary maker, goes in search of Walpole and his world of the imagination. We visit the little farm near Wasdale where he came on boyhood holidays, Brackenburn - his "little paradise on Catbells", where he eventually lived and we look out to the long views towards Skiddaw that so lifted the spirits of this adopted Cumbrian.
The landscapes of Lakeland and the blunt Cumbrians who lived and worked amongst them became a sort of family to the restless Walpole.
And from Udale in the northern fells to Ravenglass on Lakeland's western shore we track down the places that appeared in his books and that provided a dramatic and theatrical backdrop to his thrilling stories
