Leonardo DVD Product Description
Duo of BBC biographies telling the stories of two of the world's greatest artists, Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti. Both documentaries use a combination of dramatic reconstruction based on the artists' diaries and letters, critical commentary and modern-day artists' demonstrations of the techniques employed by the two great men. 'Leonardo', a three-part series presented by Alan Yentob, was made to mark the 500th anniversary of the painting of the Mona Lisa, which Leonardo began in 1503. Mark Rylance plays Leonardo in reconstructions of the artist's life, which are filmed on location in Italy. Leonardo's inventions - including a parachute, a hang-glider and a robot - are built and put to the test, and artist Leo Stevenson demonstrates some of Leonardo's many unique painting techniques. 'The Divine Michelangelo' is a two-part series starring Shakespearean actor Stephen Noonan as Renaissance artist Michelangelo, creator of the sculpture 'David' and the world-famous ceiling of Rome's Sistine Chapel. Spanning Michelangelo's long life from his birth in 1475 to his death aged 88 in 1564, the documentary features demonstrations of Michelangelo's techniques by sculptor Romolo Burati, engineer Nick McLean and fresco artists Fleur Kelly and Leo Stevenson.
