Birdman Image

Birdman, the winner of the best picture award at the 2015 Academy Awards is coming to Blu-ray and DVD on May 4th. Birdman is a black comedy-drama written and directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and starring Michael Keaton along with Zach Galifianakis , Edward Norton, Emma Stone and Naomi Watts .

The Plot of the movie focuses on main character Riggan Thomson (Keaton), a washed up actor famous for previously portraying fictional comic book character Birdman in blockbuster movies decades ago, trying to re-establish his acting career by writing, directing and starring in a stage play of a short story by Raymond Carver called 'What We Talk About When We Talk About Love'. Riggan hopes that by doing this, he will reinvigorate his career and give himself the artistic praise and legitimacy he has always craved since selling out to become Birdman. Throughout the course of the film, Riggan sees images of Birdman, who mocks and criticizes him, while also seeing himself perform feats of levitation and telekinesis. These things along with other problems backstage and with family threaten to de-rail the big opening night.

The story draws parallels with Keaton's actual acting career, in which he is famous for playing Batman in the late 80s to early 90s Tim Burton directed Batman movies. This film in reality was also a return to prominence for Keaton as an actor in mainstream Hollywood; he was nominated for and won the award for best actor at the 2015 BAFTA awards and was nominated alongside his co-stars, Edward Norton and Emma Stone for Academy Awards for their performances in the film.

The film is shot in a very unique manner, using long single takes that blend one scene into another, giving the viewer a sense of time and a fly on the wall perspective.

Birdman was released to critical and commercial acclaim, in particular for the performances by Keaton, Norton, Stone and also Inarritu's direction and screenplay. The film has a score of 89/100 on the popular site Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 88.

Since its release Birdman has grossed $98 million worldwide against a $16.5 million budget making it a financial success also.
