Replaces monopoly for me and my friends. This game was made in the 60s, but still holds up really well today. It mixes the stock-trading from monopoly with a city that grows on the boards using a scrabble style mechanic. It sounds weird, but it really works. You have to keep your head on straight though. A lot of the strategy involves keeping track of how many of each stock each player has. Which can be tricky. After a few beers your skill level will drop severely.

This is definately one of the best stock trading games. Despite the fact that I mostly play games developed in the last few years, this game (from 1964) still measures up! Granted the random tile draw is an older and imperfect method of deciding what tiles players can place on their turn, but otherwise it's a very interesting strategy game where you are constantly thinking about which companies to invest in and thus which to try and grow, and which to try and get taken over. In the early game you want to own the majority share in the companies that are being taken over in order to get a dividend payout, which is where your cashflow comes from allowing you to buy more shares. In the late game you want to hopefully have manouvered yourself into a position where you own shares of the larger companies while still making money from dividens where you can. Whoever plays the most efficiently with a little luck from tile placement will win.

The best board game our family has ever played. Best for children from 10 years old, but this is really an adult's game. Really teaches strategy and risk assessment, as well as sledging, bluff and lobbying. The guys who I play with are real life investment bankers, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs and financial PRs - and their kids. Who are now, rather irritatingly, winning quite lot.
