Top 5 Games To Look Forward To In 2020

What a year 2019 has been for gaming. We've seen some fantastic releases for both AAA releases and Indie releases as well. Many of these top games, I’ve not had the joy of playing such as Disco Elysium and Outer Wilds and other I have had the chance, such as the brilliant Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order and looter shooter Borderlands 3, which I actually reviewed back in October, (shameless plug).

With how 2019 went, 2020 has the potential to be one of the biggest years for gaming with Sony and Microsoft both releasing their new consoles as well as plenty upcoming gaming goodness so I thought, why not kick off 2020 by listing my top 5 video games I’m looking forward to in 2020?

So without further ado and in no particular order, here are the top five games I am most looking forward to in 2020...

Watch Dogs Legion

Watch Dogs Legion

Releasing on: PS4, Xbox One & PC

Watch Dogs Legion is the third instalment in the Watch Dogs world and this one looks to build on the lighter tone set by Watch Dogs 2. It's jumping across the pond and heading towards our very own capital, London and set post-Brexit. London seems to have turned very tech-heavy and a security company called Albion has gained a large influence over the city. Let's all hope this isn't the outcome of Brexit otherwise we are all going to have to start practising our hacking skills.

The big feature coming to the game is the fact that you will be able to recruit and control anyone walking around the city which gives this interaction both a potential risk of its protagonists lacking depth and character but also gives them a fantastic opportunity of showcasing multiple interesting personalities. It also gives each player a different story to tell from their time with the game. Judging from the gameplay trailers released, it’s heading towards being the latter.

Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2

Releasing on: PS4, Xbox One & PC

In my opinion, Dying Light 2 is the sequel to one of the most underrated games of the current generation. Dying Light has introduced a fantastic mix of parkour and zombie killing, to create a fun playground for you to dropkick zombies endlessly in! It was also extremely atmospheric, with the sound team doing an impeccable job to make the world come alive around you. Dying Light 2 looks to build on this by adding new features such as factions and that your actions will impact how the world looks around you.

Dark zones will be returning in this new world too, which is reportedly 4 times bigger than the original. These are part of the horror element in the game where the powerful infected known as Volatiles hide away from the daylight in nests where natural or UV light never occurs. I’ll be honest here unless the game forced me to go out at night or to one of these dark zones, you would have never found me there, it’s absolutely terrifying but brilliant at the same time!

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077

Releasing on: PS4, Xbox One, PC & Stadia

Many of you, like me, I’m sure will be replaying the masterpiece known as The Witcher 3 over and over again after the recent Witcher series that was released. Cyberpunk 2077 is CD Projekt Red’s next project and promises to be everything that we loved about The Witcher and more. Cyberpunk 2077 allows you to approach the game in any way you see fit, with both violent and nonviolent styles of gameplay (or a bit of both). The game is set in night city, a handcrafted, complex world which is split into 6 districts each promising their own unique atmosphere.

Another confirmed feature is that there are two types of XP you can earn, core XP and “street cred”, the latter is earned via side quests and will unlock brand new vendors and quest givers. This shouldn't be an issue due to the level of complexity and story shown in The Witcher 3’s side quests which hopefully means Cyberpunk will be a joy to experience.

Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima

Releasing on: PS4

This PlayStation exclusive is set in 13th century Japan which has been built from the ground up and looks absolutely stunning. The level of detail that they continue to get into games year on year always astounds me. The focus is on a lone samurai called Jin Sakai who is acting as the last line of defence for Tsushima against the invading Mongol Army.

Jin is a master of sword combat and the gameplay trailers I’ve seen so far look like the combat mechanics rely on patience and waiting for your enemy to strike first, thus giving you the opportunity to counter. The real pull for this title for me though is the plot and setting, Jin is one of the last samurai’s left and there's massive stakes and repercussions if he doesn't succeed for Tsushima.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Releasing on: Nintendo Switch

This one is more of a personal one that I’m most looking forward to as I love Animal Crossing. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is set on a deserted island where you must make this untouched piece of paradise into your own lovely little town. With that being said there's a big emphasis on crafting as the player collects resources such as wood, rocks and plants for example. You're free to add as much charm and creativity as you wish as you can set up and then decorate your home's interior and exterior. Multiplayer is also confirmed with up to 4 players being able to play locally and 8 players via online.

With all these high action games that look more realistic than real life, it's nice to have games like Animal Crossing: New Horizons that you can sit back, switch off to the world and grab a cup of tea whilst you get creative.

So that’s it, the top 5 games that I am looking forward to in 2020! Now I know your list may be completely different to mine and just because I haven’t picked what you may be thinking would be your top five doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate a good game when I see one, everyone has different gaming tastes and interests in different genres and I think from my choices, it is quite clear the type of games I prefer.

What would be your top 5 games to play in 2020? Have I mentioned any of your favourites in my list? Let us know on social media!
