This fantastic revamp made great game even better with beautiful artwork and fine tuning to military and some cards. It is still not a perfect game because of mechanics - old flaws (from modern-day gamer's perspective) remain: longevity, downtime, upkeep (although streamlined)... - it is a perfect game because it is a masterful experience every time through. Biggest + for me is even stronger now - abstracting history while keeping phenomenal historical feel. I only want to play this more and more... it may well be, with Twilight Struggle, the greatest game ever designed. You can always add some negative - for example I didn't mention that it's in a sense always the same game cause you always see all the cards (unlike let's say Nations). But all analysis aside, this game has something special, and for me it's not just that it resembles Sid Meier's CIV, which I liked and played up till fourth installment and think it's a watershed in gaming, yet do not adore. TTA has something indefinably great in its core.
This is a fantastic game with a huge amount of strategic depth and theme, you really feel like you're developing your civilization from early history through to the modern era in the style of the Civilization videogame series. As you play you'll be improving and balancing the needs of your civilizations economy, religion, military, population, happiness and buildings while fighting wars and engaging in diplomacy with other players towards the ultimate goal of attaining culture points to achieve victory. The game plays well with any player number, has rich and deep game mechanics and design, and comes with over 300 cards covering 4 ages packed full of new tech, developments, leaders, and wonders ensuring massive replayability. There's good reason this game is one the the highest rated boardgames of all-time! Absolutely recommended for anyone looking for a fantastic complex boardgame!
This new version made an incredible game even better. Mostly streamline and rebalanced a few areas, along with improved graphics and components. If you like deep historically based strategy boardgames, I highly recommend this game. Despite it's brilliance, this is not a game for everyone. Some will find it too long, because it takes at least two hours to play, even with just 2 players. Others will find it too complex, because it is a heavier game with quite a learning curve, especially for new players. So the need to cross the threshold of a relatively high level of complexity and game time will inhibit some, but those who aren't daunted by the prospect of investing some time into learning and playing this game will find themselves richly rewarded.
